Kat Matthews is the inaugural Ironman Pro Series champion, two-time Ironman and Ironman 70.3 Vice World champion, European and National champion, and fastest British female in an Ironman-branded race. She is also the first woman to finish a full distance triathlon in under eight hours, making history at the Pho3nix Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift.
The Army physiotherapist began exploring triathlon from the grassroots level, rising from sprint races to winning middle distance races outright as an amateur to earn her pro card. In her first pro race over the full distance she placed fourth at the 2019 Ironman Western Australia in 8hrs53. It was the last time she finished off the podium in an Ironman outside of the World Championships in Kona.
Succeeding years saw her win her first and further Ironman titles, place second at her debut Ironman World Championship in St. George, and bring her Ironman 70.3 title count to four including the 2023 Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain.
Kat has a penchant for pushing her limits, taking on the Pho3nix Sub8 when former contender Lucy Charles-Barclay dropped out due to injury a scant two months before race day. Racing over the full distance with a team of 10 pacemakers, top-of-the-line equipment and the finesse and consistency in execution that is a hallmark of her racing style, she stopped the clock at 7:31:54, two minutes ahead of triathlon legend Nicola Spirig.
